In honour of Prevention of Violence Against Women Week (April 12-19, 2020), we’d like to acknowledge the difficulty women are facing due to home isolation and/or homelessness, and the subsequent increased risk.

Prior to the pandemic, women had more options to address their own safety; such as being able to leave the premise, stay with a friend, or access in-person support during the workday. Due to restrictions put in place, organizations are seeing a significant increase in calls from women in distress, or simply wanting to explore their individual situation or options with a confidential, judgement free source.

Robson Valley Community Services wants women to know that support is available throughout this pandemic. Our Anti-Violence Team is ready to assist women who are at risk of violence or have experienced any type of violence over their lifetime, whether it be addressing the impacts of traumatic events or assistance towards living safer lives.

We have a Stopping the Violence Outreach Worker who can assist clients in accessing legal advocacy, out-of-town services, income supports, short and long-term housing solutions and safety planning.

We offer a 24/7 Safe Shelter Information and Support Program, which provides free and confidential information, support, and/or emergency shelter for women and their dependents who have experienced, or are at risk of experiencing, violence. We have safe options for emergency shelter during COVID-19.

Our Stopping the Violence Counselling Program offers advocacy, support and counselling for self-identifying women who are again at risk of, or have experienced any type of violence over their lifetime, be it current relationship breakdowns, physical, emotional, financial, or sexualized harm and/or childhood abuse. We’re here to help a woman recognize her current challenges and needs, address issues arising from trauma experiences, identify goals and the exploration of coping skills.

Victim Services provides support to victims of crime, and when available, support to those exposed to traumatic incidences. The coordinator also offers guidance, advocacy and information to clients navigating the legal system.

Our PEACE Program provides Violence Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling and Empowerment for children and youth 3-18 who are at risk of exposure or whom have been exposed to domestic violence.

We're not letting a little social distancing slow us down! This week we have a very special guest: a dental hygienist! Come ask a question or two, learn about oral care, and take away resources at your request.

Family Place Valemount would like to offer parents the ability to partake in Family Drop-In via Zoom. We will use this time to check in on everyone, find you resources if you need them, have topics to discuss or just have coffee and know you are not alone during these difficult times.

Join us every Friday from 9am-12pm, and feel free to jump in or out of the meeting whenever you like.

Please email events@rvcsbc.org or message us here on Facebook for the Zoom Link and Password. RVCS is taking all precautions to ensure our Zoom use is secure for all participants.

RVCS is also widening our reach by offering a new chat program on our website www.robsonvalleycommunityservices.org. There’s a chat feature called ‘Tawk.to’ on the bottom right corner of each page. An RVCS mental-health worker will engage in conversation with participants who wish to share their concerns, while connecting them to resources and further referrals as requested. The site is live from 8am-3pm Tuesday through Friday, with response times varying up to two hours (This service is not available on holidays).

RVCS is also offering casual chat services, or mental health check-ins. Please call 1-844-324-2004 to set up a time to chat with one of our mental health workers. There’s no requirement to provide your name, or to register as a client.

We’re here to help! Take care of your mental health. ❤️

If you're looking for a way to help out during this pandemic, and you know how to operate a sewing machine, please consider making cotton masks for our seniors and health compromised residents.

Contact ed@rvcsbc.org if you're interested. RVCS is also looking for buttons, 100% cotton fabric and elastics. We donate the masks to those who need them most. We will also provide users with the information necessary to ensure safe and effective mask use.

Thank you!
